Division Meeting

I am sure most of you received General Kelley's brief on the Birney's meeting held this past Friday evening just outside of Gettysburg.

One of the top items on the agenda was setting the 2007 Division and regional events schedule (click here to preview the 2d Battalion list). There are some great events this year and more info will be passed on within the next few months. Please consider these events as your unit sets it's activities for the upcoming year. We want to have a great turnout especially for those events where the Division will take the field.

It was suggested that it was the desire of the member units for an event near Gettysburg in the 3 weekend of October - a non-spectator event for the last event of the season. We are currently working with a property owner 5 miles from Gettysburg to hold such an event. The feature of this will be the ability to tour Gettysburg and shop at your leisure due to the non-spectator format. We will keep you informed as details develop.

On everyone's mind is, "How much is gas going to be a gallon in 2007". This will effect us all when choosing how far we want to drive to an event. To help with this issue, we will be launching a message board on the Division web site so that members can coordinate car pooling efforts to help offset the cost of travel to reenactments.

We are going to begin working on a Birney's Division Cadet Program for youth under the age of 16. Through this program, we will offer a chance for our young members to train and experience the life of a Union soldier, and have structured activities at events. This will also be an effort to bring in new reenactors who are parents of other youth joining the program. More details as the project develops.

Lastly, the date of the 2d Battalion Spring Drill has been set for March 17-18 at the same location as last year, Camp Workman in Ravenna, Ohio. Full details are to follow.

Here is to a great 2007 season! Please share this information with your members.

Your Servant,
C.L. Smith, Lt Col
Birney's Division, 2d Battalion

Gettysburg Parade Wraps Up the Year

This past weekend at the Remembrance Day Parade in Gettysburg was lucky to fall just between the really bad weather fronts. Saturday proved to be cool, overcast, but clear and enjoyable. The Division formation was about 75 personnel and the overall parade was huge. The shops were packed and I heard one owner mention that there seemed to be more people this year than in the past.

On battlefield news, if you have not been to Gettysburg this year, you will be happy to know that Devil's Den has been cleared of trees and brush. The "Slaughter Pen" directly across has been completely logged and cleared of about an acre of 140 plus years of overgrowth. Both areas now appear more like they did during the battle and the view from Little Round Top gives you a better picture of the action on July 2nd.

It is my hope that we can get an even larger turnout next year. Remembrance Day is a good way to end the reenacting season!!

Chris
